Sahan Society Centre had taken part in several local and community events where our members have showcased artifacts and folklore singing and dancing sessions during the events. Sahan Society Centre also encourages the use of multimedia as a tool the member’s need to express their culture and folklore within their communities and to be proud of their identities. Sahan Society Centre, for instance, had been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund to create a documentary called Janaale (the fortune men) about the history of the Somali people based in the United Kingdom. The documentary was aimed at informing those currently living in the United Kingdom of the struggles the early settlers had faced when they arrived during the late 19th and early 20th century and to re-enforce the local Somali speaking community’s identities in a British context. This was the first documentary ever to be recorded and funded by the HLF on Somali History and was received very well by the community and the wider public. The Heritage Lottery Fund had subsequently funded our charity to complete another documentary on Somali Unsung Heroes which entails understanding and exploring the contributions made by Somali men and women to the cause the British Empire during the first and second world wars.
